THREE of the Island’s hardest working volunteers will be honoured at this evening’s Isle of Man Newspapers Excellence Awards looking for the 2010 ‘Volunteer of the Year’.
Barbara Thorn is a volunteer for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and has raised awareness and helped raise substantial amounts of money for research into treatments and cures.
Barbara has overcome her own adversities to use her experience to help others and is always to be found at the heart of local fund raising events.
These include the annual Bra Dash and numerous events at the Gaiety Theatre, touching the hearts of many local residents.
George Campbell is a senior manager involved in Bradford & Bingley’s charitable activities and is an infectious and enthusiastic participant in support of a number of Manx charities.
His irrepressible attitude has caught the imagination of many people and he has a strong following of supporters who recognise the commitment he makes.
Carol Pattie is a volunteer with the Western ‘Live at Home’ scheme based in St John’s, and part of the Manx Befriending Group.
Carol co-ordinates and prepares food for fund raising events, often serving meals for large numbers of elderly people on a weekly basis.
She encourages greater respect for older people and through her natural leadership skills has had a very positive impact on the volunteering sector.
The Tynwald Mills Award for Volunteer of the Year will be presented by Stephen Bradley.
