THE Microgaming Award at the Isle of Man Newspapers Awards for Excellence on Thursday evening is for “Innovation and Independent Thinking’. It features Dr Helmut Kessler of CVI Technical Optics, Jackie Betteridge of Crossroads Caring for Carers and Noel Hayes of Manx2.com.
CVI Technical Optics, a global leader in the production of high energy laser optics, has produced components used in the Mars Phoenix Lander probe. The company has developed niche optical products which are unique, resulting in consistent growth for the business.
The company also designs its own in-house machinery, enabling it to manufacture products at prices below Chinese competitors - a fine example of innovation and independent thinking.
Crossroads Caring for Carers is currently being used as a model for similar initiatives in the UK, based on the success of the Isle of Man project.
The charity aims to improve the lives of carers on the Island, developed from scratch employment-based training for adults with learning difficulties which has helped young adults over the age of 18 develop skills, become more self sufficient and find employment.
Local businesses support the charity and its scheme which has gained further recognition after a presentation to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
Manx2.com has shown an abundance of innovation and independent thinking during a difficult last twelve months in the Isle of Man’s airline industry.
The company has launched a number of new routes in new markets and promotes the Isle of Man at every opportunity, whilst recognising the need to control costs and overheads and to increase market share.
Manx2.com uses the internet extensively to promote its routes and is also on Twitter.
The award will be presented by Roger Raatgever of Microgaming.
