Up to 40 firefighters worked for two hours to bring a gorse and grass fire on Bradda Head, Port Erin under control last night (Tuesday).
As well as local crews, others from Douglas and Castletown used water jets, a large spraying unit and three six-wheel, all terrain vehicles, as they battled the flames in dark and extremely windly conditions.
The fire was on an outcrop of rock overlooking Port Erin Bay, below Milner's Tower on the south side of Bradda Head, and local knowledge helped the firemen get into position to tackle the flames.
At the height of the incident an area about 200 by 100 metres was ablaze.
The cause of a gorse fire in what would appear to be unusual circumstances isn't known at this stage, but a full investigation will be carried out today.
The alarm was raised by one of the many people in Port Erin who saw the fire, at about 7.30pm.
Crews stayed on the scene after the fire was under control, to dampen down and ensure there were no flare ups.
