THE public have been invited to have their say on the future of the Douglas Promenades.
The Department of Infrastructure has recognised for some time that the promenade carriageways require reconstruction to replace the worn out sections of roadway, improve the ride quality, and enhance the aesthetic appearance of the promenades.
It has prepared a consultation document – "Issues and Options" – which the public can use to air their views on how the promenades can be developed.
This is the first stage in defining the scope of works that need to be carried out and assessing an appropriate timescale for the delivery.
The public have been asked to comment on issues such as the positioning of the horse tram tracks, footways, cycleways, parking, the Marine Garden and various junctions along the promenades.
Minister for Infrastructure Phil Gawne said: "The Douglas Promenades have served the Isle of Man well for in excess of three quarters of a century and we are seeking the public's views on the promenade's layout and use which will best serve us in the future.
"It is important that we receive as many views from the public as possible to allow the department to compile the best understanding of the needs and desires of those who use Douglas Promenades."
The department has said that work on the promenades would be split into two stages – the Sea Terminal to Broadway and then Broadway to Summerhill.
As the promenades are almost two miles long the department has warned that the works may take several years to develop and to deliver.
The "Issues and Options" document is currently available for viewing at the Chief Secretary's Office, in libraries, and at local authority offices.
Copies are also available from the Department of Infrastructure reception, the department's website or the Sea Terminal. All views must be received by January 28.
In addition individual members of the public can take part in focus group discussions on these works which are scheduled to take place during the week beginning January 13.
Anyone who wishes to take part should contact the department before December 31.
