Outbreak of viral gastroenteritis in the Island

by isleofman.com 15th November 2010

THERE have been several cases of viral gastroenteritis reported in the Island.

The Department of Health say the most likely cause is Norovirus but virological identification has not yet been possible.

Specific features of this strain of virus are vomiting with abdominal pain. Some patients have only had diarrhoea and fever has also been noted especially in young children.

The virus seems to be affecting children predominantly although no age group is exempt.

Those who are affected are recovering within 24 hours.

The Department has instructed that anyone suffering with this illness should not visit Noble's Hospital, the GP or a pharmacist.  Instead contact a GP or MEDs by telephone.

The affected person should drink fluids regularly and wait for 48 hours after all symptoms have stopped before returning to work or school.

The virus is highly infectious and good hygiene especially hand washing is essential to prevent other members of the household from picking up the virus.
