A POLICE Inspector has urged residents to take the warning about bad weather seriously.
Following the Met Office's warning, about severe weather conditions today and tomorrow, Mark Britton said the public should not make any journeys unless completely necessary.
The Inspector of the Roads Policing Unit has issued the following advice:
- Drivers of high sided vehicles should take additional care and not travel unless necessary
- Fords and rivers may flood
- There is a likelihood of fallen trees - particularly in the morning
- Drivers are asked to drive carefully and take note of the conditions
- Ensure that your property is secure and that any items that are free to blow away are tied down
- Be alert to hazards when driving
- In wet weather it can take twice as long to stop your vehicle so slow down
Inspector Britton said: "I would like to reassure the public that we will attend all emergencies however our vehicles could also be hindered by the adverse weather conditions and it may take us a little longer to get you.
"We are going to have to prioritise our work and react accordingly. I would also ask that you seriously consider the need to contact the emergency services before dialling 999 ensuring that we can focus on the people who need us the most."
The Department of Home Affairs will be working in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure to ensure that arterial routes are kept free.
