Fire officer explains Balthane evacuation

by isleofman.com 9th November 2010

The cordon at Balthane Industrial Estate was lifted this evening (Tuesday), allowing people to access the site again.

The restriction was put in place following a major fire last night, which destroyed the warehouse of computer recycling company Ask Buck .

The site was evacuated after the discovery of an oxy-acetylene cylinder near the scene.

Assistant divisional fire officer John Murtagh says it's highly explosive, so the area had to be cleared (play audio file):

The cause of the fire will be investigated tomorrow.
