A huge bill to amend dozens of criminal justice laws goes before the House of Keys today (Tuesday).
The Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill updates and extends the law over a wide sweep, from police powers, through licensing, sex offences and drugs laws, to public order.
In all, the Bill's 85 clauses could amend 26 exisiting Acts.
The Department of Home Affairs says it will enhance criminal justice in the Isle of Man.
Its critics say there's no evidence much of it is needed, in view of the Island's low crime rate.
A proposal for fixed penalty fines for certain offences, which would mean avoiding the courts altogether, has proved controversial.
Former law lecturer Peter Murcott says it's a worrying move (play audio file):
The Department of Home Affairs says the bill has been fully consulted on and all the responses have been carefully considered.
A document called the Outcome of the Consultation contains a summary of views received, and explanations for the department’s decisions to retain or deal in other ways with various clauses.
