A CADET from Glen Vine has reflected on his action-packed time as a St John Ambulance cadet to His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor.
James Smith, 18, was selected as cadet to Sir Paul Haddacks in 2009. The Lieutenant Governor appoints two cadets a year – one from St John Ambulance and one from the cadet forces in the Island.
James first got involved with St John Ambulance at the age of five as a Badger – the live saving charity's youngest branch.
He progressed through the ranks to become a fully-fledged first aider and said: "Being the Lieutenant Governor's cadet has involved attending many social events at Government House – the Christmas reception, the TT and MGP receptions, Commonwealth Games events and many more. I have also attended several parades with His Excellency.
"The whole year has been great but highlights were meeting new and interesting people, including a few celebrities, and getting the chance to see some military bands which were amazing."
James, a student at the Isle of Man College, continued: "I really would recommend young people to get involved with St John Ambulance, because I've also been to Buckingham Palace twice to meet The Queen and the Princess Royal and travelled throughout the UK - all through my achievements with St John Ambulance.
"From a first aid perspective I've saved two lives and I wouldn't have been able to do it without the help of St John Ambulance teaching me."
Liz Coase, 17, has been selected to replace James. She has been a member of St John Ambulance since the age of six.
The Douglas student said: "I had an interview with His Excellency and Lady Haddacks at Government House and was selected. I am looking forward to going to the various occasions and meeting lots of interesting people."
