Joined-up buying saves taxpayer's money

by isleofman.com 7th November 2010

TAXPAYER'S money is going further thanks to the government's new co-ordinated approach to the buying of goods and services.

A new procurement policy – which was announced by Treasury in May – has resulted in Manx Petroleums Ltd supplying ultra low sulphur diesel for a number of government departments through a single contract.

Before the policy departments including Community Culture and Leisure, Health, Infrastructure and the Post Office bought their own.

The aim of the policy is to achieve value for the taxpayer while supporting the local economy.

Treasury Minister Anne Craine MHK said: "Government spends in the region of £1.5 million a week on the things it needs to do its job of providing services to the public.

"It makes sense for departments to work together to get the best deal for the taxpayer and I am delighted that our new procurement policy is already producing results."

It is estimated that the new arrangement will deliver a saving of around £165,000 on previous costs.
