WORK has started on the new Health and Community Centre in Jurby.
The October sitting of Tynwald approved the Department of Health's wish to spend £1.6 million on the project.
At a Breaking the Ground Ceremony on Monday, November 1, Captain of the Parish John Quayle cut the first sod.
Health Minister David Anderson said: "This is not only a major investment for Jurby and a sign of our confidence in the Jurby community but also the culmination of many years of hard work by my department to bring about this much-needed additional health facility which will serve the north and west of the Island.
"Additionally for the first time it will provide a proper base for the many community activities which are currently working from a cramped house (Earroo Nane) and will allow us to return the house to use as a family home."
The new health centre will provide a modern purpose built two-GP surgery and space and facilities for a wide range of community activities – including those currently provided at Earroo Nane.
It will relieve pressure on the GP practices in Peel and Ramsey and also provide more local and convenient access to primary health care services for those in Andreas, Ballaugh and Kirk Michael.
The Minister praised his predecessor, Eddie Teare MHK, who he said played a "key role" in making the development possible.
Dandara Ltd is the main contractor for the project and will be supported by a number of local contractors and suppliers.
The centre is expected to take a year to complete.
