Jury rejects 'necessary abduction' claim

by isleofman.com 3rd November 2010

A single mother from the Isle of Man has been found guilty of abducting her own son.

The 46-year-old woman took the then seven-year-old boy to Canada last summer, to stop him being taken into care.

Today (Wednesday), after a fortnight long trial at Douglas courthouse, she was found guilty.

The court heard how the woman, who hasn't been named to protect the child's identity, bought a house in Canada, left a false trail of emails about her whereabouts and was determined to hide from the authorities.

She admitted abduction but pleaded the defence of 'necessity', claiming her son was in danger of being sexually abused by his father.

That abuse was unproven and the jury, made up of three women and four men, took less than three hours to find the defendant guilty.

She will be sentenced on Thursday morning (November 4).
