A MAN who attempted to extinguish a fire at Lowey and Co before the fire service arrived suffered smoke inhalation.

The man, who has not been named, was given oxygen therapy by fire crews and taken to Noble's Hospital as a precaution following the incident at the estate agents in Nelson Street, Douglas, yesterday (Tuesday).

Two fire appliances from Douglas, a duty fire officer, an electrician and an ambulance attended.

Breathing apparatus, a hose reel, lighting equipment and hand tools were used at the scene.

Station Officer John Kelly said: "Fire crews from Douglas Fire Station were dispatched to a reported smell of burning at an estate agents.

"When crews arrived they discovered the incident involved a light fitting situated on the rear stair area leading to the basement of the office.

"The fire had just started to spread into the ceiling.

"Fire crews set to work in breathing apparatus to ensure the fire was extinguished.

"The office was heavily smoke logged however other occupants managed to evacuate the property and apart from being slightly shaken they sustained no injuries.

"All fire personnel were clear from the scene at 10.59am, after checking the areas of fire spread were now safe and that no hot spots remained."

In terms of fire safety advice he added: "We strongly advise that the best plan of action is to close the door on the fire and leave the property, immediately calling the fire service. Smoke can kill in minutes."
