Major employment event for jobseekers

by isleofman.com 1st November 2010

JOBSEEKERS and those looking for advice on making a career change are encouraged to attend the Island's largest annual gathering of local employers.

The Employment and Skills 2010 event will showcase potential recruitment opportunities, advice on CV's and help jobseekers with interview techniques.

The event, which is hosted by the Department of Economic Development (DED) and the Department of Education and Children (DEC), is the successor to the carers convention which is usually held in the spring.

Jane Jelski, group manager for Employment and Skills at the DED, said: "The focus of the event has changed to meet the needs of adults as well as students.

"The event has attracted a wide range of employers - some of whom will be promoting current and future opportunities in their companies and sectors - and others who will be recruiting for immediate starts."

The Jobcentre, Careers Guidance Service, Disability Employment Service and Training Services will all be on hand to provide advice and help.

Nearly 1,000 students from the Island's secondary schools will attend in organised groups to talk to employers about the qualifications they need to enter careers before they make crucial A-level choices.

Clare Christian MLC, Political Member for DED with responsibility for employment, said: "This event provides a unique chance to talk face to face with a wide range of organisations about employment opportunities in the Isle of Man.

"It is important that Island residents have the appropriate skills to help employers take forward new opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

"I hope that as many people as possible join in and take advantage of Employment and Skills 2010 to make the most of the exciting opportunities on offer."

There will be extra support available for NEETs (those aged 16-24 who are not in employment, education, or training) and those on Jobseeker's Allowance.

The event takes place at the Villa Marina on Thursday, November 25, from 9am to 8pm. It will be closed between 3.30pm and 4.30pm. Admission is free.
