Bronze statue vandalised

by isleofman.com 31st October 2010

A VANDAL attack has caused £2,000 worth of damage to a bronze statue of a naked athlete.

It happened between Thursday night and the following morning in the Rose Gardens in Glen Falcon Road, Douglas, opposite the old brewery buildings.

Police described the attack as "as sacrilege to the memory of the people who bequeathed the land".

The statute had been ripped off its plinth in the middle of the Rose Gardens, damaging its feet, and then dragged along grass into the passageway causing more damage to the statue.

Police said it will cost £2,000 to repair before the public of Douglas will be able to see the statue in all its glory again.

They believe there may have been a large group of youths drinking in the area on that night and would like to hear from them or anybody else who may have information about who has caused the damage.

Anyone who can assist the police should ring 631212.
