THE Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the death of Manx teenager Jamie Haslett.
Jamie, 19, was killed in Sheffield yesterday (Wednesday) after being run over by a police car at approximately 3.45am.
The South Yorkshire Police car was travelling to provide assistance to an ambulance crew dealing with a patient at the time of the incident.
The incident has been referred to the IPCC by South Yorkshire Police Professional Standards Department. IPCC investigators were deployed to the scene to begin the independent investigation.
IPCC commissioner Nicholas Long said: "My thoughts are with Jamie's family at this incredibly difficult time.
"Our investigators have met with them and have begun their work to examine all the circumstances surrounding the incident in the hope that we can identify how and why this tragedy happened."
Jamie, from Onchan, was in his second year of study at Sheffield Hallam University. He was a former St Ninian's High School pupil.
