Residents encouraged to prepare for winter

by isleofman.com 28th October 2010

EXTRA preparations are being made for the winter after freezing conditions and heavy snowfall last year left the Department of Infrastructure "stretched to full capacity."

The Operations Division has put together a "Preparing for Winter" leaflet which outlines what action the Department will take in the event of snow fall or adverse weather conditions.

It also gives residents advice on how they can prepare themselves for the cold weather.

Phil Gawne MHK, Minister for Infrastructure said: "Last year the Department was stretched to full capacity to deal with the snowfall and freezing weather conditions experienced throughout the winter.

"The Operations Division provides an out of hours emergency service which operates 24 hours a day 365 days of the year.

"They deal with all types of emergency including flooding, fallen trees, oil spills and road traffic collisions as well as winter maintenance operations such as gritting and snow clearance.

"The depots at Ellerslie and Glen Duff are stocked to capacity with 5,000 tonnes of grit and our team are on standby in preparation for what may be another cold winter for the Isle of Man."

The leaflet also contains a map of the Island showing the primary gritting routes covered by bulk gritters.

Residents are reminded that grit is available free of charge for domestic use from all civic amenity sites. Organisations are also able to purchase grit for commercial use from Ellerslie Depot.

Leaflets will be distributed to all households and businesses from November 1.

Copies will also be available from the Sea Terminal.
