ST Ninian's High School in Douglas has paid tribute to Jamie Haslett who was run over and killed by a police car in Sheffield in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday).
The 19-year-old, of Onchan, was a student at Sheffield Hallam University.
A statement from St Ninian's said: "All the staff at St Ninian's High School send their heartfelt condolences to the Haslett family on the tragic loss of their son and brother Jamie.
"Jamie left St Ninian's in 2009 after successfully completing his A levels.
"Throughout school Jamie was a well liked and respected pupil.
"He represented the school at every level of sport and also the Island as part of the successful boys' football team that competed in California, USA.
"Outside school he was an integral part of Laxey Football Club and a member of Manx Harriers.
"To all who knew Jamie he was a friendly, sociable, well liked and respected young man. As a school prefect Jamie was an excellent role model to the younger pupils.
"Jamie was studying for a degree in Sport and Business Management at Sheffield when he was involved in a tragic accident that cut short such a promising future. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him."
The police car had been responding to a request by an ambulance crew for assistance with a seperate matter.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating.
A spokeswoman from Sheffield Hallam University told the BBC: "We are sad to confirm that one of our students, Jamie Haslett, died in a road traffic incident on Broad Lane, Sheffield.
"Jamie was in his second year studying BSc (Hons) Sport and Business Management.
"He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time."
