'Don't judge governments when sending aid'

Should the Isle of Man be more choosy when it comes to sending cash abroad in foreign aid?

The chairman of the Manx government's Overseas Aid Committee says he understands some people object to giving money to Pakistan after its catastrophic floods, because it's a nuclear power.

Rushen MHK Phil Gawne says the committee can face hard choices if countries where such donations are sent can be accused of corruption, or ignoring the problems of their own people.

However, he believes that when it comes to poverty, it's important to help others on humanitarian grounds without trying to judge their governments:
