MHK wants answers about policy on retail parks

by isleofman.com 23rd October 2010

CHIEF Minister Tony Brown MHK is to be quizzed in the House of Keys about the government's policy on out of town developments such as retail parks.

Douglas East MHK Brenda Cannell has tabled a question at Tuesday's sitting of the Keys.

Out of town retail parks are now common throughout the UK where major chains open up huge stores with free parking outside of town centres.

However in the Isle of Man there are concerns that major retailers could impact on local businesses who already provide the same - or similar - services.

Pets At Home is the latest big name chain to be linked to the Island.

It has been looking at a site at the Spring Valley Industrial Estate and has even advertised for staff.

isleofman.com contacted Pets at Home with a series of questions including if the store is going ahead and when, however the company has not made any official comment.

What do you think? Should the Isle of Man have a retail park or would it be too damaging to existing businesses? Send us your views via the comment box below
