A story in the British Medical Journal on the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, scans in early breast cancer, has prompted the Department of Health to clarify the position in the Isle of Man.
The item, in the current issue of the publication, says the use of such scans in the early stages of the disease may lead to unnecessary surgery.
Director of Public Health Dr Parameswaran Kishore says the article is about assessing patients who have already been diagnosed with the disease, and not breast screening, which is the method of detection used in the Isle of Man.
He is stressing MRI scanning isn't used in breast screening, either in the Isle of Man or the United Kingdom.
Dr Kishore is strongly encouraging women to attend screening.
He says it has shown to be effective in detecting breast cancer early, and therefore improves the outcomes of treatment.
