'Specials' to benefit from new sick pay rule

Special constables in the Isle of Man injured on duty will in future be able to claim sick pay.

Tynwald has approved new regulations giving them the right to claim an allowance from the Department of Home Affairs, if they lose earnings from their 'day job' through injury or disease contracted while serving the constabulary.

There are currently around 40 special constables serving the Island and Minister for Home Affairs Adrian Earnshaw says it's a good way for those considering policing as a career to see what's involved.

However, he's stopping short, for now, of making involvement with the 'specials' mandatory for recruits to the main force:
