The go ahead has been given for the preparation of detailed proposals for the first phase of the 'Destination Douglas' scheme.
Plans to breath new life into the Island's capital were presented to the chief minister's regeneration steering group at the end of last month, and those preliminary ideas have now been approved.
The initial phase will see major improvements to the north of Duke Street, Strand Street, Regent Street, John Street, the west of Neslon Street, Howard Street and Granville Street.
Manager of the Douglas Development Partnership Chris Pycroft says the scheme promises to herald 'a momentous new era' for the town.
Mr Pycroft is stressing the preparation of detailed designs doesn't mean a budget allocation from the Town and Village Centre regeneration fund.
However, it does mean consultation with retailers and other town centre stake holders can begin, as the detailed design process gets under way.
Areas covered will include paving, drainage, street furniture, and street and architectural lighting.
There will also be discussions with property owners on improving building facades in the area.
