Government's childcare record defended

Minister for Social Care Martyn Quayle says improvements to looking after children in care have been made, despite the lack of an external inspection recommended four years ago.

An inspection was recommended by the Commission of Inquiry into the Care of Young People Report in 2006.

It was established to examine the circumstances surrounding the sexual assaults and murders of 16-year-olds Samantha Barton and George Green in 2002.

Both were in care at the time and a major finding of the report was the need for the Manx health services to be subject to 'regular external validation' to ensure high standards were maintained.

In Tynwald this week, East Douglas MHK Chris Robertshaw said things were moving too slowly, but Mr Quayle says a time table approved by the court is being followed:
