Race relations 'technicality' sparks lively debate

by isleofman.com 20th October 2010

An unexpected debate has taken place in Tynwald on racism in the Isle of Man.

An amendment to update the Race Relations Act 2004 was thought likely to go through on the nod.

Instead it led to to a lively exchange of views on the level of racism in the Island, and what should be done to tackle it.

Rushen MHK Juan Watterson spoke out against any moves to increase the obligation on employers to tackle racism in the workplace (first part of audio file):

West Douglas MHK John Shimmin said keeping the Race Relations Act fit for purpose was important, and the Isle of Man must show its approach to the issue was robust (second part of audio file):

Chief Minister Tony Brown explained the motion was little more than a technicality, to update existing legislation.

He told members they had lost track of what was actually up for debate (third part of audio file):

Mr Brown won the day, and the amendment was later approved by Tynwald.
