Extended fishing season for Manx anglers

by isleofman.com 20th October 2010

MANX anglers will be able to enjoy an extended period of fishing this year after Tynwald approved a third season of winter reservoir fishing.

Six of the Island’s most popular reservoirs will be open from Monday, November 1, to Monday, January 31.

These are Sulby, Injebreck, Clypse, Kerrowdhoo, Ballure and Cringle.

Although there is no stocking carried out over the winter months survival of trout in the reservoirs is high.

The resident trout provides more of a challenge to anglers as it is fitter and more elusive in nature.

Angler catch returns in 2009/10 indicate that over 500 fish were captured during the winter season with 81 per cent of these being re-released to the reservoir.

Juan Turner MLC, member for Fisheries said: "Winter fishing has been a resounding success with local anglers for the past two years and I am very pleased that the Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority has agreed to the extended season for a third year.

"I would like to encourage anglers to take advantage of winter fishing opportunities while at the same time look after your environment and make sure all litter is disposed of properly."

Winter fishing regulations are different from those for summer - in particular crimped or barbless hooks must be used and there is a daily bag limit of two fish.

Fishing licenses cost £35 and are available to purchase from Thursday, October 28 from the Department of Environment Food and Agriculture headquarters at Thie Slieau Whallian, St John's, or by clicking here.

Children under the age of 14 can fish for free provided they are in possession of a free licence.

Full sets of the regulations can be obtained by contacting the Fisheries Directorate on 01624 685857.
