Directive from 1976 will continue to be used

Tynwald has been told the Manx government has no plans to adopt a new EU bathing water directive, due to be implemented in 2015.

Chief Minister Tony Brown was replying to a question from David Callister MLC, who wanted to know how bathing water quality around the Island might be affected if current standards continued to be applied.

Mr Callister drew attention to the fact only six of the 18 beaches tested during the summer met minimum quality standards under the present system.

He said there was a risk that none of the Island's beaches would pass, if they were tested under the new, more stringent standards.

Mr Brown said the Island currently used a directive from 1976 and would continue to do so:
