First Tynwald sitting of election year

by isleofman.com 19th October 2010

Tynwald sits today (Tuesday) for the first time since the summer recess, with plenty for members to consider.

Among the business the court will discuss are 65 questions and a main order paper with 63 items.

Various departments will ask to spend a total of ?5.4 million on projects including the Manx Electric Railway and local schools, and some familiar issues are on the first question paper.

Michael MHK David Cannan kicks off question time, quizzing the chief minister about a planned wind farm in the northwest of the Island, and asking whether tide power would be a better option.

South Douglas MHK Bill Malarkey and Peel MHK Tim Crookall have questions for the chief minister about the Manx Electricity Authority and the ?414,000 loss made by its showrooms.

Untaxed and uninsured vehicles are on the mind of Rushen MHK Juan Watterson, who will ask both Home Affairs Minister Adrian Earnshaw and Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne about the problem.

Liberal Vannin Party Leader Peter Karran will ask questions about the Island's new bus timetable, while the politician who led opposition to the new system, North Douglas MHK John Houghton, will call for a select committee to look into the issue.

You can hear live coverage of this month’s Tynwald sitting on Manx Radio's AM1368 frequency, from 10.30am.

This time next year a new House of Keys will have been voted in, at the general election in September 2011.
