MHK probes government's 'defeatist attitude'

It's time to scrutinise the whole 'sorry saga' which led to an ultimately successful campaign to save the Reciprocal Health Agreement.

So says an MHK who next week will call for a select committee to be set up to examine what lessons have been learned from the negotiations between the governments of the Isle of Man and the United Kingdom.

The agreement, which allows Manx residents travelling to the UK to receive free hospital treatment on the NHS, and vice versa, was saved at the eleventh hour.

A six-month interim extension was agreed in March, before the permanent deal was signed last month.

However, Rushen member Quintin Gill says there remains uncertainty over who made it happen, and some questions, including the reasons for what he calls the Manx government's 'defeatist attitude', still need answering:
