Education minister on UK tuition fees proposal

Education Minister Eddie Teare says the Manx government will keep a watching brief on plans in the United Kingdom to increase university tuition fees.

A review of higher education in England is recommending universities should be able to charge what they like, and yesterday Business Secretary Vince Cable endorsed the idea.

It means an average student in the UK could build up debts of over ?30,000 by the time they graduated, although they would only start to repay fees when their income exceeded ?21,000.

Mr Teare says the Manx government will always do what it can to help students from the Island:
