A WEEKEND of free workshops for young people interested in Manx music and dance takes place at the end of this month.
It will be held on Saturday, October 23 and Sunday, October 24 at Douglas Youth Centre and is hosted by Bree.
The annual event will culminate in a concert showcasing the creative efforts of the students.
Bree (Manx Gaelic for vitality or energy) was formed in 2006 as an educational and social group for young musicians interested in Manx traditional culture.
Tutored by experienced local musicians and dancers from groups including King Chiaullee, The Reeling Stones, Caarjyn Cooidjagh, Perree Bane and Skeeal, students in school years 6 – 13 can opt to study vocal or instrumental techniques, songwriting, composing and arranging, Manx dancing, group playing and performance skills.
The students are expected to be fairly competent at singing or playing their instrument, but do not require any previous experience of Manx traditional music or dance nor to be able to speak Gaelic.
Although the October weekend is the main highlight, Bree organises other events throughout the year including a monthly music session at Green's restaurant, busking for local charities, performance opportunities at festivals and community concerts as well as special workshops such as a fiddle school and Bree Band Camp.
Young musicians can join at any time throughout the year.
The Bree weekend - organised by Chloë Woolley for the Manx Heritage Foundation with assistance from members of the Youth Service and Soundcheck - is free to attend but places are limited and pre-registration is essential.
Students are expected to bring their own instruments and packed lunches.
