MHK will fight to prevent land sale

by isleofman.com 4th October 2010

North Douglas MHK John Houghton is pitting himself against the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure again.

After strongly criticising the department over its new bus timetable, he is now opposing the decision to sell the former Summerland site for housing.

Last week, Minister David Cretney said the department would apply for planning permission to allow the land to be used for residential purposes.

The aim would be to sell the site to developers for around ?5 million.

Mr Houghton says he will fight to prevent a sale going through, and is accusing the department of being bankrupt of ideas.

In a statement, the North Douglas MHK says leisure facilities are badly needed and selling the property would mean losing a piece of strategic land for ever.

Mr Houghton goes further, claiming the department is ducking its responsibility to young people by failing to provide something for them to do.

His motion at the October sitting of Tynwald will call for the department's decision to be reversed.
