THE Eastern Neighbourhood Policing Team are urging cyclists to "Be Bright, Use a Light".
They are running a campaign - which starts today (Monday) and goes on until October 31 - to encourage cyclists to use lights at night.
PC Alan Shimmin, who is leading the initiative, said: "Like it or not, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer and cyclists are getting caught out on the road without the appropriate lighting at night time.
"Cyclists should know that being well lit is very important, it is critical that motorists and pedestrians can see cyclists on the road.
"Officers will be proactively seeking out cyclists young and old and issuing safety advice while also reminding them of any offences they may be committing.
"As an added bonus to this campaign we are very fortunate to get the support of Bikestyle who are based on Bucks Road, Douglas - they were very enthusiastic in being part of this safety initiative.
"During the campaign period they are kindly offering a 10 per cent discount on bicycle lights.
"Although I suspect the younger generation may be averse to having lights I would like to appeal to parents to ensure that they educate their children before letting them cycle in the dark."
