Developer must be sensitive to site's history

Whoever ends up buying and developing the Summerland site will have to bear its history in mind when coming up with plans.

That was made clear by Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure David Cretney after announcing his department had given up trying to create a leisure facility on the land, and would be selling it for housing instead.

Fifty people were killed and 80 seriously injured when fire broke out in the original Summerland complex in August 1973.

Mr Cretney says the site still holds those memories for many Island residents, and any developer will have to take that into account:
