Nineteen-year-old Olivia Curran has become the second Manx gymnast to see their Commonwealth Games ambitions shattered, when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament in a training accident, here in Delhi.
The first ever female gymnast to qualify for the IOM team at the Commonwealth Games, Olivia is in a full-leg plaster cast and will need surgery when she returns to the Island.
Speaking this morning, she said, "I can’t believe it. I’m upset, I’m angry and so frustrated.
"One minute I’m in tears, the next I want to throw things at the wall. It was just an accident.
I was on the bars, about to dismount and my hand slipped off the bar. I slipped and landed on my knees. I knew I’d damaged it. The move I was doing was nothing unusual and was part of my regular routine."
Still visibly upset, Olivia explained that she had deferred going to University to try and qualify for the Games.
"I have been training full time – 30 hours per week. I had an operation on my ankle a year ago and since then I’ve been playing catch up to be ready.
"It’s been a real struggle, but having qualified, we were happy that over the past couple of weeks, we were at the level we wanted to be at.
I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was three. I went to the Commonwealth Youth Games when I was 13 and that really opened my eyes to big competition. I’ve had four-year plan to get to these Games, inspired by Alex’s (Hedges) participation in Melbourne 2006.
"I was never especially talented but I work hard. I have enjoyed the two-year build-up. There have been plenty of people who have doubted me along the way, but they have only made me more determined."
Straight away when it had happened she knew it was serious but the initial examination was thought to show no significant damage. Only when in the hospital did the full extent of the damage become apparent.
Gymnastics team manager, Haresh Measuria was understandably still upset, after seeing the second of his five –strong team hospitalised and out of the games.
"I’m devastated. For Olivia and for Andy. After Joe’s accident yesterday, and now this, it feels like the floor has been pulled from under the whole of the gym team."
It was a case of ‘same again’ for the team Doctor Frank Vaughan.
"It is incredibly unlucky to have a second serious injury in less than 24 hours. Especially in the same team. Again the Delhi medical care was excellent but we’re getting to know the hospital staff better than we should do! As with Joe, we are presently organising ongoing care for Olivia for when she returns to the UK."
