Incinerator up for top waste management award

by isleofman.com 30th September 2010

THE incinerator in Braddan has been shortlisted for a waste management award.

The plant, which is operated on behalf of the Department of Infrastructure by SITA Isle of Man, is one of three sites to be named finalists in the Peel Peoples Cup which is awarded annually by the Chartered Institute of Waste Management (CIWM).

The cup was first awarded in 1989 and is recognised as one of the most prestigious prizes in waste management.

The incinerator - known as the Energy From Waste plant, is up against Re-Gen Waste Ltd's Materials Recovery Facility in Newry, Northern Ireland, and the Mansfield Materials Recovery Facility operated by Veolia Environmental Services Ltd.

Head of waste management for the Department of Infrastructure John Wrigley said: "The award is judged by the President of the CWIM, Terry March, who recently visited each of the shortlisted sites.

"The winner will be announced towards the end of next month and the fact that the plant is in the running for such an award is testament to the superb work carried out by SITA."

The incinerator opened in 2004 and employs 32 people.

It can process up to 60,000 tonnes of municipal and commercial waste per year, producing up to 10 per cent of the Isle of Man's electricity needs.

Each year the facility welcomes around 1,000 visitors through its doors.

Tim Otley, head of SITA Energy Solutions, said: "The criteria we are being judged on includes site supervision, operational features, teamwork, staff welfare, safety, environmental impact, aesthetics and plant maintenance.

"It's a fantastic achievement to have been shortlisted and it's a great credit to our staff, who ensure the site runs to the highest operational and environmental standards."

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK said: "The Energy from Waste facility plays a crucial role in how we manage our residual waste and since the facility became operational in 2004 the Isle of Man no longer sends any biodegradable waste to landfill.

"Being shortlisted for the Peel Peoples Cup is recognition of how well the plant is operated and on behalf of the department I'd like to commend the efforts of SITA Isle of Man and its staff over the last six years."
