Plans to make the Ramsey estuary an area of special scientific interest will be debated at a public meeting this evening (Thursday).
Environment chiefs want to preserve the estuary - regarded as a valuable habitat for wildlife - and its contents for future generations.
However, there’s concern, including from Ramsey commissioners, that such status could stifle development in the harbour area, including a possible marina.
Interested parties have until October 25 to submit their views on the proposal and Environment Minister John Shimmin says tonight’s meeting forms an important part of the ongoing consultation.
The meeting at Ramsey Grammar School starts at 7.30pm.
If the proposals are confirmed, the department says normal harbour operations and angling activities will continue.
