'2012 gas conversion will be smoother'

The new boss at Manx Gas says he won’t be repeating the mistakes of 2003, over converting homes to natural gas.

Seven years ago the company changed over properties in Douglas, but the sheer scale of the project led to chaos, as workers struggled to keep up.

New managing director Tony Nicholls says there will be a huge survey next year before work starts on converting 6,500 homes and businesses in the south, west and north in 2012.

He is assuring customers the smaller scale of this operation means the company can plan the changeover better:
