THE Department of Health has launched a consultation process for a new oral health strategy.
The strategy sets out plans for oral health provision in the Island for the next five years to 2015.
Its main aim is to improve the condition of children’s teeth as currently more than half of five year olds in the Isle of Man suffer from tooth decay.
David Anderson MHK, Minister for Health, said: "I am pleased to announce the launch of this important strategy. In the absence of water fluoridation it is vital that other proven methods of preventing tooth decay are introduced."
The strategy will also address the priorities of access to urgent care, providing appropriate oral health care services for vulnerable groups and shifting the emphasis in existing services from repair of disease to prevention.
Mr Anderson continued: "This strategy provides the Island with the tools it needs to combat dental disease and propose a redesign of dental services which will ensure a focus on prevention and quality."
The consultation period will last for six weeks. Comments should be submitted by Monday, November 8.
The consultation document can be found here.
