Torrential rain cuts short annual challenge at Ramsey Golf Club

TORRENTIAL rain cut short the annual challenge between the club president and captain at Ramsey Golf Club on Saturday, September 18.

With 17 of the 26 pairs shooting sub-par scores it was a competitive afternoon despite being cut to nine holes due to the rain.

Club president John Mead led the way with partner Sophie White in his match with club captain Richard Power and lady captain Karen McGurgan.

In a tight nine holes Richard’s birdie on the second put the captain’s team ahead from the start. Great driving from Sophie together with a slick short game from the president resulted in a creditable draw on 21 points.

Behind them the real dog fight was being played out with the lead changing throughout the afternoon and the final result not being known until the final group came in.

On the president’s team Roger Butler and Pam Davies posted a fantastic 25 points after a terrific par for Pam on the seventh in driving rain and steady pars for Roger throughout the game.

This put his team ahead of the captain but it was a close run thing with David Gaines and new player Wendy Hogan knocking it 26 points for the captain.

With two groups still out on the course the president was trailing by just two points. Ian Jones and Jenny Webster turned this over with 22 points.

It was left for Sammy Tumblety and Alan Cooke to decide the match and with a birdie two on the final hole by Alan they left it in no doubt with 25 points giving the president a nine point lead and a narrow win.

Richard was magnanimous in defeat and said: "Johnnie has been a great contributor to the club and I could not think of a better friend to win this competition."
