Ramsey Golf Club's two day competition results

by isleofman.com 14th September 2010

MORONEY'S advocates and Raymotors sponsored the two day Autumn AM AM at glorious Ramsey Golf Club last weekend.

Moroney's star player, Louise Byrne, teamed up with Barbara and Brian Monk with Steve Leece in what was always going to be a foursome with potential to do well in this format.

There was an international flavour added to the competition with Tony Kennish bringing in Alwyn McCreanor and Derek Jackson from adjacent Isles and Kenny Chesterton up for a weekend from Castletown.

With his guests given the usual Friday night team talk from Tony they were rearing to go by late Saturday afternoon, choosing a tee off time that just managed to miss out on a late afternoon downpour.

Local usual suspects were in the hunt with Daniel and Malcolm Callow, Ian Jones and Adam Greenwood playing very well and Steve Westcott with Tim Kelly, Malcolm MacDonald and Harold Faragher all getting podium day prizes.

Daniel Callow’s birdie 4 on the opening hole and again on the 5th resulted in a score of 18 under and second place on Saturday to Louise Byrne's team who were streets ahead on 21 under after birdies on the 6th and 14 from Steve Leece and Brian Monk.

Sunday saw the birdie's shared out in Steve Westcott's team and they came in with 16 under but after an early 2am finish the previous night Tony's team were relentless and 18 under was enough for them to take the day prize from second place Steve.

The overall prizes were a different matter. Some fuel injected golf from the past captains was not enough to out pace Roy Smith's AM AM specialists.

David Casement's Raymotors would have fine tuned either team and you would have thought that  a two day score of 35 under would have been enough for Dennis McGurgan, Fergus Murdoch, Geoff Gough and Vinny Lyall to race in first but they just did not have enough acceleration to head off Roy Smith, Eric Corkish, John Carine and Ron Dakin who pipped them at the checked flag by one shot with a super score of 36 under.

A packed clubhouse afterwards enjoyed the presentation and all left contemplating next week’s President v Captain Challenge.
