Minister seeking views on proposed ASSI

The decision to create an Area of Special Scientific Interest at Ramsey estuary has not been set in tablets of stone.

Yesterday (Monday), the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture confirmed plans to protect the saltmarsh, which is regarded as a valuable habitat for wildlife.

However, interested parties can submit their views on the proposal until October 25, meaning the designation could still be varied or withdrawn.

Ramsey commissioners are among those concerned the ASSI status could stifle development in the harbour area.

Minister John Shimmin says as part of the on going consultation, his department will hold a public meeting on September 30:
