Open evening for Youth Motor Project

by isleofman.com 12th September 2010

THE Isle of Man Youth Motor Project is holding an open evening this week.

It takes place at its workshops which are based off Glencrutchery Road, Douglas, next to Elmwood House and behind St John Ambulance headquarters.

The event is on Thursday (September 16) from 6.30pm until late and young people, parents, carers and professionals are welcome to go along.

The Youth Motor Project works with young people from all backgrounds and offers informal tuition in vehicle mechanics and advice on issues affecting young people.

There are opportunities to learn to ride trials bikes and attend and take part in motorsport events and shows.

The Department of Education and Children said it is a great place to hang out, get advice, work on projects and be part of a fun, long-established youth group.

New members must be in schools years 7 to 13.

The project was set up as a charity with a grant from the then Department of Education in 2000 and has worked with more than 600 young people in schools and through voluntary sessions held in the evenings and at weekends.

Principal youth officer Ken Callister said: "The Youth Service, through the Department of Education and Children, continues to help fund and support this unique project.

"The staff, through the specialist activities they provide, have had an impact not only on making young people safer and more responsible road users but have helped young people to get jobs using the skills they have learned."

Anyone who cannot attend the open evening but wants more information can ring Pete Hodgson on 460601 or email youthmotorproject@manx.net
