RAMSEY is on course to get a makeover after regeneration plans for the town were given the go ahead by Government.
Plans to improve the appearance of the town, make more of its character, reduce traffic and improve parking, will be taken forward to a further design stage after approval by the Chief Minister’s Regeneration Steering Group.
The regeneration proposals, which were developed by the Ramsey Regeneration Committee, are the first proposals in the Island to be given the go ahead for further planning and development.
The Committee will now develop more detailed plans in relation to the heart of the town around the Court House, Bourne Place, Market Hill, East Street and Market Place and the lanes joining Parliament Street to the Quayside.
Ramsey Regeneration Committee chairman Allan Bell MHK said: "This agreement is a great step forward. We can now get on with developing major regeneration proposals which will help to make Ramsey more vibrant, bright, lively and colourful."
Money to fund the regeneration has been earmarked from the Town and Village Regeneration Fund if the more detailed proposals are supported by the community and local businesses.
Chairman of Ramsey Commissioners Captain Nigel Malpass said: "I am delighted with the positive progress made so far and grateful for the many residents who have had a positive input in taking the Regeneration of Ramsey forward."
