by isleofman.com 23rd August 2010

TWO fire stations held open days over the weekend which raised more than £5,600 for charity.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service opened Ramsey Station to the public on Saturday and Douglas Station on Sunday.

Leading fire officer Colin Kirkham said: "At Ramsey there was a continuous flow of people throughout the day, while at Douglas there were crowds of people attending.

"The queue started at 9.45am to get in when the event started at 11!

"Both events had marvellous displays and stalls and were very well organised.

"The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service wants to extend their thanks to fire personnel who attended, plus their family, friends and relatives who assisted and local businesses and organisations who supported both events.

"Most of all thanks to the community who attended the open days so enthusiastically."

Proceeds from Ramsey open day totatlled £1,800 while Douglas raised £3,830.  Funds will be divided between the Fire Fighters’ Charity and local charities including Rebecca House Foundation and Help for Heroes.

Mr Kirkham added: "The total raised is marvellous and it will now be up to the Fire and Rescue Service’s Welfare Club to decide the amount to be presented to each charity. We are also considering making donations to other small charities."

Deputy chief fire officer Kevin Groom said: "I'd just like to say how pleased I am to have seen and met so many people at both events. It was an excellent opportunity to promote the skilled and varied work of the Isle of Man Fire
and Rescue Service and also provide some fun and entertainment."
