POLICE are urging people to be "extremely cautious" when dealing with unsolicited telephone sales staff.
The warning comes after they received a report of a resident who had been contacted by someone claiming to represent a large UK based company.
The "sales person" offered the resident an opportunity to sign up for a joint landline and mobile phone package.
The resident was suspicious when he was asked to supply his banking details during the call.
Constable Mike Radcliffe, Isle of Man Constabulary's crime reduction officer, said: "I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to be extremely cautious when dealing with unsolicited telephone sales persons, whether at home or work.
"It's impossible to tell the difference between a genuine caller and a scammer when dealing with someone on the phone and I would therefore recommend that you should always err with caution.
"Never disclose any financial information during a 'cold call' phone conversation and where necessary request full details of any sales proposal in writing prior to agreeing to take up an offer."
