Care home charge increase defended

The Department of Social Care has described an increase in charges for those living in its care homes as, "correcting an historic inequity".

The change sees whatever amount a person is given in attendance or disability living allowance tacked onto their weekly charge for living in the home.

North Douglas MHK John Houghton has described the move as a "stealth tax", which has been done because the department didn't want to face public anger by simply withdrawing the benefits.

But Social Care political member Bill Malarkey says the changes bring things into line with the private sector and have been clearly flagged up:
