Anger over 'stealth tax on elderly and sick'

by isleofman.com 13th August 2010

A political row is brewing over increases in charges for government residential care homes.

North Douglas MHK John Houghton is branding the move 'a stealth tax on the elderly and sick'.

Under the new arrangement, payments received by residents by way of attendance allowance and/or disability living allowance are added on to their basic weekly charge.

Mr Houghton is arguing that, as those who are less well off receive more benefits, they are also paying more for their care.

Political member for Social Security Bill Malarkey, MHK, says Mr Houghton's assertion the change is inequitable is wrong.

He says it brings residents in government homes into line with the private sector.
