Means testing could be part of government housing review

by isleofman.com 9th August 2010

The Department of Social Care has confirmed it has received views from local authorities on the need for a public sector housing policy which serves the Island in an affordable, sustainable and fair manner.

It says several of them have acknowledged that changes are necessary, and suggestions have included means testing rents, or pegging them to private sector levels, with tax or social security credits for people who needed help.

On Talking Heads today, political member of the department with responsibility for housing Bill Henderson said there were some serious problems to address, but discussions were at an early stage (play audio file):

The department says the views expressed by the local authorities will help it put together a housing review.

The review will include a consultation exercise which will give members of Tynwald, the public and others the chance to contribute to the debate.
