RUSHEN’S three MHKs have teamed up to push forward the idea of a new activity hall for the south of the Island.
It follows the Department of Community Culture and Leisure’s announcement that they want to progress the creation of a series of low cost activity halls around the Island.
Rushen’s MHKs - Phil Gawne, Juan Watterson and Quintin Gill - have jointly put in an expression of interest, and are now looking for community groups that are interested in using and running such a facility in the community.
“This will be a key facility for people of all ages in Rushen, especially young people,” said bid co-ordinator Juan Watterson, “We are keen that as many organisations as possible come forward, whether as users, managers or supporters to ensure that this facility comes to Rushen rather than elsewhere in the Island. Any group with a need for a space to practise or play in is urged to come forward. We’d rather hear from people than not.”
Member for the DCCL, Quintin Gill said, ”These activity halls are being developed for communities who are under-provided for in terms of sporting and other facilities. Rushen has been identified by the Department as one such place, and so I would encourage people to get involved in this innovative project.”
Phil Gawne added, “As a member of the Council of Ministers I will be supporting the funding for this bid within the coming budget process. This is a key opportunity for sporting participation in Rushen and one I hope as many people as possible will support.”
The facility is subject to the agreement of the Department of Education in terms of the siting, and subject to planning permission.
